What is “As It Was” by Harry Styles about?

It’s that time again! The campaign for Harry Styles’ third album, Harry’s house, has finally started! Early this morning we got our first sniff at the sound with the excellent beach pop synth number “As It Was”, which has some nice hints of A-Ha! on this subject. There is also a video, in which Harry spins on the Barbican Center in London in a custom Arturo Obegero sequin jumpsuit, crashing into other people in some sort of elaborate big dance.

Whether it’s his lyrics or his coded visuals, there’s a common theme that runs through Harry’s work: what you see isn’t necessarily as straightforward as you might imagine. It’s the same for “As it wasAs soon as the song and video dropped, internet stans tried to dissect the track’s larger themes from bits of the song and fleeting moments in the visuals.

So where to start ? Well, the themes of people’s theories vary wildly – conversations about sexuality, relationships, family upbringing, and feelings of self-worth. There are, of course, plenty of Larry theories, but let’s not bother to touch on the weird litters! 🙂

The most prevalent fan theory on social media is, in fact, related to The matrix.

The idea being that we accept ignorance and security with the blue pill, but we enter the truth and the unknown by taking the red. Of course, there are hints of the pills in the song itself, and the video’s red and blue color scheme. The only question remains: what truth could Harry be facing? Could he already be in it and wish to return to an old way of life?

Hey, maybe there’s new meaning to the music video if you watch it upside down, like this stan did?

It’s funny, the track’s upbeat production distracted most of us from the sadness of the song itself. Read the lyrics without music and the more melancholic side comes out, dealing with things like Harry’s penchant for being close to others and not enjoying his own company.

Our favorite:

Big fan of this stan whose elaborate unboxing of the hidden meaning of the video leads them to the conclusion: “I’m fucked in the head”

There are also slightly more optimistic theories, as if he was finally coming back to himself, happier than ever.

But of course, this may be one of the few times where what you see is what you get, and we all sit here looking dumb as Harry runs through these theories, amazed at how point his stans read closely after just 12 years. hours of this song existing on planet earth!

Go watch the video now and decide for yourself exactly what it all means.
