Volkswagen has launched two special versions of the 2024 VW ID.Buzz, its all-electric pickup truck due out next year, to coincide with the release of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. One van is decorated to join the dark side while the other is inspired by the Jedi master of the light side.
“The opportunity to explore how ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and the Volkswagen brand could come together on one vehicle was pure pleasure,” said Doug Chiang, vice president and chief creative officer of LucasFilm, in a statement. Press. “Themes of good and evil, light and dark are not necessarily concepts that we apply to cars. The ID. Buzz collaboration offered a unique opportunity to have cars become graphic reflections of two emblematic characters.”
The movie studio and automaker drew inspiration from Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi when designing the respective vehicles.
On the light side, the passenger van version is adorned with two tones: decked out in chrome on the upper half in homage to spaceships and droids from the Star Wars universe. The bottom half takes on a tan hue, representing Kenobi’s tunic.
A blue line on the sides mimics his lightsaber.
The dark side cargo variant sports shades of red and black. Matte black drapes the top half while a gloss black coats the bottom. Red lines the side lines, headlights, light strips and window surfaces as a symbol of Darth Vader’s lightsaber. The bus also has red underbody lighting.
Both models feature bespoke 21-inch wheels that further accentuate the side the vehicle falls on.
“In close cooperation with Lucasfilm, we combine the timeless and functional design of the ID. Buzz with the fascinating and detailed world of Obi-Wan Kenobi,” said Jozef Kabaň, Head of Design at VW.
VW says the collaboration is part of the company’s efforts to position the brand as a more emotional entity, wanting this to play into its ongoing electrification strategy.
The campaign also includes a commercial made with LucasFilm and Industrial Light & Magic, featuring Kenobi and other characters from the Star Wars universe.
The vehicles were on display at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, Calif., and were featured as part of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series’ red carpet premiere on Disney+.
The ID.Buzz is already available to order for European customers and is expected to be available to order in the United States next year. VW has yet to provide pricing details.
