What to know before changing your PSN Online ID

You can revert to an old ID and your friends can still find you with a new ID

You can revert to your old User ID as long as the name does not violate the Terms of Service. To start using your old ID again, simply contact PlayStation Support. This is a free service and there is no limit to the number of times you can rewind.

In addition, your old ID will remain at your disposal. In other words, no one else will be able to use this online ID even if you change your username.

Regarding your friends who can find you, Sony has provided the ability to display your old ID next to your new ID. This will remain in your profile for 30 days. However, you can only select this option when changing your Online ID.

Only games originally released after April 1, 2018 support online ID changes

The game must be released for the first time on or after April 1, 2018, to support online ID change function. This is because games released after April 1, 2018 were developed using tools that support system-level change. That said, Sony does not guarantee that all games fully support this feature. PS3 and PS Vita games are not supported.

For example: A game released in 2015 that was remastered or resold as a full edition in 2018 will not support the ID change feature.

Because not all games and apps for PS4, PS3 and Vita are guaranteed to support ID changes, you may occasionally experience issues or errors with particular games.

According to Sony, a vast majority of “Most Played PS4 Games” tested support the feature. Make sure you see the following lists of games tested before making the actual change, otherwise, you risk losing in-game currency (paid or earned), in-game progress, scores, trophy progress, and the game may not work properly both online and offline.

Sony said that if you’re having trouble not playing on the tested games list, revert to your old online ID. This should solve most of the problems encountered. If restoring does not resolve your issue, the company advised contacting PlayStation Support.
