Oakland Police Trigger Identity Of Suspects In Retired Police Captain’s Theft, Ex-Cop Kills Suspected Thief

OAKLAND – Police posted a photo of a Nissan Sentra here that is believed to be linked to Thursday afternoon’s incident in which a retired police captain was shot dead after he shot dead a man suspected of stealing it in a gas station.

The incident is still under investigation. Surveillance footage shows three men approach retired Police Captain Ersie Joyner III, who is seen pumping gasoline at a Chevron station at 1700 Castro Street in Oakland. As the thieves break away from Joyner, he pulls out a pistol and opens fire, fatally killing one of the men.

Moments later, Joyner is repeatedly shot dead during an exchange of gunfire with another of the suspected thieves, who flees in the Nissan. Joyner remains in critical but stable condition.

Social media posts identified the man killed as a rapper from Vallejo who uses the stage name Lil Theze, but his name has not been released by authorities.

Oakland Police released a photo of the black 2007 Nissan Sentra four-door with tinted windows, custom rims and a San Francisco 49er license plate frame on Saturday afternoon. The California license plate number is 6ATC357.

Police encourage anyone with information about the vehicle to call investigators at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-3278.
