How to change your PlayStation Network name and online ID without losing access to games

Like your first email address, your PlayStation Network (PSN) name, if you set it a long time ago, can also be a bit awkward. One of the long-standing issues with PlayStation Network was that you couldn’t change your online PSN ID or PSN name without losing access to all of your games purchased with your old PSN ID. Finally, in 2019, Sony allowed PSN users to change their usernames without losing access to games associated with users’ old PSN names. The new process is simple and works smoothly with games released after April 1, 2018. For older games, adapting to PSN name changes is always tricky and losing access to them remains a possibility.

However, if you have decided to clear your old PSN name, the process is very simple. With just a few simple steps, you can change your old PSN name to a new, more decent one. Please note that changing your PSN name is only free the first time. If you want to change it again in the future, Sony will charge you. Let’s see how to change your PSN ID.

Step 1: On the home screen of your PlayStation device, select your profile picture in the upper right corner. Your profile will open on the following screen. Try to find a pencil-shaped icon with the label “Edit profile” in the middle right of the screen, and click on it.

2nd step: On the next screen, you will see a list of details about your profile that you can edit. The list includes name, online id, profile picture, avatar, cover picture, information and languages.

Step 3: If you also want to change your name, which is not your PSN name and is only displayed to your close friends, select the name option. On the next screen, you can set your first name, middle name, and last name.

However, if you just want to change your PlayStation Network username or PSN name, select the “Online ID” option.

Step 4: The next screen will show you the terms and conditions related to a PSN name, read these terms and click “Continue”. The next screen will ask you to verify your identity by entering your password. Enter your password and click OK.

Step 5: You can choose a new PSN ID on the next screen. Try the names you have in mind and see if they are available. Once you are done, click “Confirm”.

Please remember that whatever name you are going to change is the only chance you have. For other changes, you will have to pay a fee of $9.99 (around Rs 743) or if you are a Plus member, you will get a 50% discount.

After changing your PSN name, it may take some time, up to a week in some cases, for games to adjust to your name change. Note that you can always switch back to your old name for free in case you run into too much trouble.
