While Xbox gamers have long had the ability to change their Gamertags, the name that is displayed to other gamers when playing online is immutable for PlayStation gamers.

Anyone who wanted to get rid of an old name simply had to create a brand new account, which meant losing access to games purchased on the existing one, as well as trophies and friends that would remain linked to them.

The first name change will be free for all users, and your old ID will still be available to come back for free – but Sony has revealed that the name changes won’t work for all games.

The problem is that instead of giving players a unique numeric ID to which names are then attached, as most of these services do, Sony’s system used the name as a unique identifier on the back- end.

This means that changing that name without serious changes would make the games think you’re a new player, as there was nothing in the system originally to tie the two usernames together.

Almost all games released in the past year should continue to function normally, go through the renaming process, and display your old name, according to Sony, but some will not.

“All PS4 games originally released on or after April 1, 2018 have been developed to support the online ID change feature,” according to PlayStation social media director Sid Shuman. “However, since not all of them have been specifically tested with the feature, we cannot guarantee that they will support it,” he continued.

Before changing your name, be aware that Sony has tested a wide range of games and found ten that have “critical issues” that could cause you to “lose in-game currency, whether paid or earned”, lose money. game progress, lose content you have created in the game, and potentially prevent parts of the game from working properly.

These games include Just Dance 2017, LittleBigPlanet 3 and Worms Battlegrounds – you can see the full list of tested games on the Sony website.

Other games have more minor issues, such as previous online IDs being visible to other players, IDs appearing empty in leaderboards, unlinking game accounts, and resetting certain in-game settings.

One of them is Grand Theft Auto V, which is still very widely played online and updated regularly.

However, Rockstar has confirmed that the issue in their case is very minor – the only issue is that your in-game team members won’t see your new name “until you log into GTA Online and play.”

HOW DO I CHANGE MY PSN ID?

  • Step 2: Select the Edit button next to your online ID.

Sony advises gamers to “consider the importance [the issues] are yours “if you play before you change your login.

Meanwhile, some Overwatch players have reported errors when changing IDs, but these issues usually seem to resolve on their own within a few hours after the change has propagated.
